Google has started rolling out Personal Intelligence for Gemini on Android Auto. The feature lets Gemini draw on your Gmail, Calendar, Photos, Maps and other Google apps so you can ask for things in the car without spelling out every detail. The rollout began on October 20, 2026, and it is opt-in.
What Personal Intelligence does in the car
Gemini replaced Google Assistant in Android Auto earlier this year. Personal Intelligence makes its answers specific to you by pulling details from your connected Google apps, so you can leave out information it can look up itself. Google's examples include:
- "What's my flight gate? And is my flight on time?" Gemini finds the booking in Gmail and answers both questions.
- "Take me to my doctor's appointment," using the event in Google Calendar.
- "Find the car wash from the photo I took last week and navigate there," using Google Photos.
- "Find me an indoor restaurant along my route that matches my usual vibe," based on your saved places and preferences.
Which apps it connects to
According to 9to5Google, Personal Intelligence can use Google Workspace apps such as Gmail and Calendar, plus Google Photos, Maps, Search and YouTube. It can also remember preferences, such as a dietary restriction, so you do not have to repeat them every time.
How to turn it on
Personal Intelligence is opt-in, and no apps are connected until you choose to enable it. If it is already switched on in the Gemini app on your phone, Android Auto picks it up automatically once the rollout reaches your account. If you leave it off, Gemini still handles navigation, music, calls and general questions; the answers just are not personalized. Google has not said that every user will get it on the same day.
Cars with Google built-in
Vehicles that run Android Automotive (Google built-in) will get Personal Intelligence "in the coming months." On those cars, Google says personalized responses are only available when you are in the car with your phone connected.
Should you use it?
- Turn it on if you often need trip details, appointments or addresses buried in email and want to ask for them hands-free.
- Be selective if you are cautious about data access. Only connect the apps you actually need in the car.
- Leave it off if you mainly use Android Auto for navigation and music; you lose nothing essential.
